Put your watch back several hundred years when you arrive at the uniquely-positioned Impalila Island that straddles the confluence of four countries.
It’s incredible to imagine that you could be enjoying a Namibian beer called Tafel, a Zimbabwean Zambezi, a Botswana St. Louis or a Zambian Mozi, all in close proximity. To be sure, time has completely stood still here where the Masubia tribe has lived as it has since time immemorial. Come and see their day-to-day life, virtually as it always was. Observe what they eat and where they sleep…whilst still ploughing their lands with teams of oxen. They live basic lives, cooking over open fires, carrying water and goods on their heads from the Chobe River.
Cultural performances take place intermittently, displaying a deep need for their own styles of music and dance. Of interest, the South African Defence Force once used Impalila Island as a military base. This meeting point of four countries was formerly known as The Caprivi Strip and is now called The Zambezi Zone.

A professional guide will meet you at the entrance to the Cresta Mowana Resort. You’ll pass through riverside Botswana and Namibian border posts en route to Impililo Island. (Don’t forget your passport.) On arrival at the island a local guide will host the visit to the cultural village. Blankets or ponchos are available for cooler weather.

When: The cultural village excursion is available daily from Kasane’s Cresta Mowana Resort.

Time: You may arrange to visit the village any time to suit you between 09:00 and back by 16:00, the daily deadline on the river.
Price: USD55pp*. The tour will depart with a minimum of 2 guests and a maximum of 20.
What to Pack? Passport required. Binoculars will always enhance any game-viewing experience en route and will be a real boon for bird lovers, who will be more than thrilled with the many species that come and go in this region. You will of course come with long lenses for greater distance images. Don’t forget extra batteries. Sunscreen and lip balm are more than helpful in these dry conditions and carrying ‘wet wipes’ are ideal for freshening up your face, neck and hands. Sunglasses will soften the glare – especially in the middle of the day. Do bring along small packets of tissues. In cooler months (periodically late May through September) we advise bringing a jacket, jersey or shawl. We offer blankets and ponchos.
N.B. Comfortable walking shoes are essential as there is a moderate walk from the river to the village and back. A wide-brimmed hat is also highly recommended.
